The Valero Alamo Bowl has become one of the premier bowl games after humble beginnings as the Builders Square Alamo Bowl. It held that moniker for five years before the Sylvania corporation bought the naming rights and held if for three years. The rights were then bought by Mastercard who held them until 2005. In 2006, with no title sponsor, the game was simply known as The Alamo Bowl. It wasn't until Valero Energy bought the rights in 2007 that the game has steadily grown in stature.
The Alamo Bowl has sold out seven of it's 16 played games, the first being in 1995 and the last in 2011 when the Baylor Bears met the Washington Huskies and both teams put up 123 points between the two teams, Baylor winning 67-56. That is a record still stands and that 2011 game was the first time a Heisman Trophy Winner (Robert Griffin III) played in a Alamo Bowl. The Bowl Game also has produced eight of the 20 most watched bowl games in ESPN History with the 2006 Texas Longhorns/Iowa Hawkeyes match up earning a 6.0 rating with over 8.83 million viewers.
The 2016 match up, the 24th edition, features two top 12 teams in the #10 Colorado Buffaloes against the #12 Oklahoma State Cowboys. The path for the Buffaloes nearly led to a playoff berth for the National Title but they were derailed by a 41-10 loss to Washington.
For the Colorado Buffaloes, their path led to the Big 12 Title game against the Sooners of Oklahoma. After a hard fought 38-20 loss, the Sooners walked away with the title and a bid to the Rose Bowl.
Both Colorado and Oklahoma State readily accepted the bid to play in the Alamo Bowl which will be held December 29th at 9 PM Central Time.
